Our youngest players (8-11 years old) start in the Under 11s Cadet Team.
The under 11’s play the Flag Football version of the game (5 versus 5) and the focus at this level is all about introducing the basic techniques of passing and catching and running with the ball.
Flag Football is a non-contact introduction into the sport. Boys and girls play together and everyone can be included. No previous experience is necessary. The focus at this level is on encouraging participation, development and skills progression.
No expensive equipment is needed for the cadets. All they need is a gum shield, suitable footwear and plenty of water. Find out more about what kit is required here.
We train for two hours on Sunday mornings (09:45 till 12:00) and seek to enable the children to develop the skills required to play American Football in a fun and active session.
We offer supportive coaching that promotes learning and strongly believe in providing a fun and friendly environment for the children. While everyone enjoys winning game, results are not the most important thing. We emphasise taking part, respecting your team-mates and your opponents, good sportsmanship and fair play, enjoying the opportunity to learn and to make friends.
From the very first session, we ensure the Cadets know that they are part of a larger youth set-up. We work carefully to have all our teams relating to one another to form bonds and lasting friendships within the Phoenix family.
As the children grow older, that larger set-up becomes even more important as the children progress to the under 14 Development Team where the children continue to play Flag Football but also start to receive developmental coaching on the basics of contact football.
