U11 & U14s compete at the Wild Bowl

The Kent Phoenix took our Under 11 and Under 14 squads to east Kent this weekend to visit the Thanet Mustangs and take part in the Wild Bowl Flag Football tournaments.

Under 11s

Kent Phoenix Flames v Kent Phoenix Fire, 2 June 2024.We were really pleased to see our Cadet Squad field two teams at the Wild Bowl. With recent growth in numbers, it was a great opportunity to give all our players (including some very new recruits) a chance to experience a flag tournament together. To accommodate the numbers, the Mustangs kindly allowed us to field two teams – the Kent Phoenix Flames and the Kent Phoenix Fire.

Of course, local bragging rights added an extra layer to the matchup between the Fire and the Flames and it was the Fire who came out victorious in that one, 24 points to 12. The tournament was won by the Solent Red Storm. They were rewarded for the long trip from Southampton with three wins and the Wild Bowl 2024 crown.

For our Cadets, it remains an important learning experience. As Coach Stuie said:

“I am so proud of every single cadet that played today. The Cadet group is growing stronger and stronger and I’m proud to be their coach.”

Under 14s

Kent Phoenix v Thanet Mustangs, 2 June 2024.It was a tough tournament for our under 14 squad who played three and lost three against some good sides. With several under 14s missing through illness or injury, the Phoenix faced a tough task but certainly gave their all throughout a very warm, sunny day in Margate.

We had not played the under 14 Thanet Mustangs before this season and it proved to be a close and even contest in our first game of the day. The Mustangs eventually winning out 18-12.

In the second game, the Phoenix faced the Solent Red Storm. Their first meeting since the Stinger Bowl back in March, the Red Storm again won comfortably over the Phoenix; this time by the score of 30 to 0. The Red Storm had a very successful day overall and won the under 14 league by winning all three games without conceding a single point to any of their opponents.  Their under 14s have now won all three tournaments in 2024 in which the Phoenix were also competing – the Stinger Bowl, the X Bowl and now the Wild Bowl.

In their final game of the day, the under 14s faced local rivals the Kent Exiles once again. They played most recently earlier this year in the Stinger Bowl third place playoff and, like that game, there wasn’t much in it between the two teams as they met again. The Exiles finally triumphed 24-18.

The Kent Phoenix won’t have long to wait until the next tournament. We are very pleased to host our home tournament – the Fire Bowl – on the 16th of June.
